Following a few years of both scholarly and consulting research, plus designing and development, the following trial beta versions were conducted for the future higher order program offerings. Beta sessions conducted were:
• Higher Order Political Acumen in Dec 2009
• Higher Order Wisdom in Feb 2010
• Higher Order Emotioning in March 2010
Fielding Graduate University (FGU) Winter Session 2010. Bernie, and colleague Dr. James Webber, presented a half-day session on “Wisdom and Humour” at FGU on January 13, 2010. It was a seriously playful, interactive exploration of the wisdom in humor and humor in wisdom. The session included an overview of the three meta-theories of wisdom, plus provided a framework for constructing the fourth. Also included was the pragmatics of humour using work reported by the International Society of Humour Studies. Finally, links between humour and wisdom were provided, including storytelling, and the archetypical roles of the Jester and the Sage. Implications for personal and organizational life closed the well-received session.
Strategic Capability Network Presentation. Bernie accepted an invitation to present to the local Calgary chapter of the Strategic Capability Network (SCN) on April 27, 2010. His talk was titled “From Huh? To HOT** and Back Again (**Higher Order Thinking)”. It was flattering that SCN had to cap attendance at 60, with a waiting list. Besides spreading the word about HOT, Bernie enjoyed meeting some old acquaintances not seen for some while, plus meeting new professionals working in the field. In lieu of an honorarium for the talk, SCN made a donation on behalf of Bernie to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Geoff Bellman Launches New Book. Geoff Bellman has been a wonderful, role model for many consultants. He has had a significant positive impact on Bernie’s consulting endeavors, particularly in the early years because of Geoff’s seminal book “The Consultant’s Calling: Bringing Who You Are to What You Do” (the subtitle is a higher order exemplar!). Geoff has recently released a new book, co-authored with Kathleen Ryan, titled “Extraordinary Groups: How Ordinary Teams Achieve Amazing Results”.
