What’s the problem?
You can find a multitude of consultants, trainers, and professors who offer leadership coaching, development, and education. Most fall into one of two problem categories.

Problem Type #1: Many of these well-intentioned folk have gained their knowledge only from reading and talking about leadership. This is akin to trying to learn how to fly an airplane from someone who has only studied the theories of flight but never flown a plane. Absurd? Yes!

Problem Type #2: Another large group of folk have lived leadership experience. They likely have many great stories to tell of their experiences, but they have not put in the effort to learn the necessary conceptual distinctions of leadership based on their experiences from that of the research of others. These folk are akin to the capable bush pilots of the north; however, it would be absurd to hire a pilot to be your Chief Training Pilot whose only learning experience has been to fly “by the seat of their pants”.

A Few Leadership Tenets

We recognize there are primary tenets in leadership. For example:

Good leadership is a joyful struggle, sometimes without much joy!
It is often without easy answers (otherwise everyone would be a good leader, right?).
To really learn about leadership, folks need to live being a leader.
Metaphorically, any spectator’s espoused prescriptions for game play makes what needs to be done sound easy. However, the player on the field experiences the game play much differently and thus needs prescriptions relevant and real to the play on the field.
All leaders can benefit from stepping back and reflecting on their performance, then making improvements with better plans and execution. “Know thyself” and “See yourself as others see you” are leader’s critical maxims.
All leaders can benefit even more by seeking knowledgeable help in their reflecting, seeing possibilities, and then choosing their improvement options. Leaders get by with a lot of help from their friends!
